What “research use only” means

"Research use only" means a product is not for human or veterinary use and is not made or reviewed as a drug. What that implies for quality and legality.

Guides, by The Peptide Directory Editorial Team, Published

Key takeaways

  1. RUO products are not drugs: no FDA review of safety, effectiveness or manufacturing quality.
  2. The label does not make a product legal to use in people.
  3. Approved peptides (semaglutide, tirzepatide, tesamorelin) have legal prescription routes; RUO versions are not those products.

Most research-peptide sellers in our vendor directory carry a notice that their products are “for research use only” or “not for human consumption”. That phrase has a specific meaning.

Not a drug

A research-use-only (RUO) product has not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or manufacturing quality. Drug manufacturing rules — the controls that make every Wegovy pen match its label — do not apply.

Not a loophole

The label describes the intended use; it does not make human use legal. For investigational molecules the manufacturer itself may say so: Eli Lilly states that retatrutide “cannot be legally sold or marketed for human use”.

Approved alternatives exist for some molecules

Semaglutide, tirzepatide and tesamorelin have FDA-approved products with prescription routes; see our telehealth providers. For unapproved peptides such as BPC-157, there is currently no approved product at all.

If you evaluate RUO vendors

Use the COA checklist: lot match, named lab, date, HPLC purity, mass-spec identity and contaminant testing.

What the evidence does not show

  • That an RUO product matches the purity or dose of an approved drug.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to buy research-use-only peptides?

Sellers market them for laboratory research. They are not approved for human use, and marketing them for human use can violate federal law.

Is RUO semaglutide the same as Wegovy?

No. Wegovy is an FDA-approved product made under drug manufacturing controls; RUO material is not.
